ATLANTIC BEACH, SC - A Gallivants Ferry woman faces an impersonating state or local official charge in connection with the Nov. 1, 2011 election in Atlantic Beach.

Laura Best, 66, was booked into jail Wednesday night.

Best once held the positions in the Horry County Republican Party and as a State GOP Executive Committeeman.

Atlantic Beach Police Chief Mike Bordner said the case had been under investigation for some time.

According to a police report, an officer responded to the Atlantic Beach polling place on Nov. 1.

The officer spoke with a witness who said Best claimed to be an agent with the S.C. Attorney General's office and was sent to observe the election.

This witness also told the officer that Best harassed poll watchers.

Another person at the polling place said that Best approached her saying that she was breaking the law by challenging votes.

Police asked for Best's ID and she only had a drivers license. Best then said that she was a volunteer floater for the Attorney General and in town to observe the election.

The officer contacted the AG's office and human resources was not aware of a floater and said that Best was not an employee of the office.

The results of the Nov. 1 election were later thrown out by Atlantic Beach’s Municipal Election Commission.

Gov. Nikki Haley set a new date for the town to have an election on May 22, 2012.

ACORN never did that.

Wow, think of how much taxpayer money that was paid to hold the election ended up being wasted since the results were thrown out. If Ms. Best is found guilty part of her restitution should include reimbursement of those expenses for her actions.
