The author is (Ret.) Col. James R. Woodall, a former Commandant of Cadets at Texas A&M University.
Refugio County Press Editor Kenda Nelson’s article that appeared in the May 31, 2007 issue about Lloyd “Pete” Hughes will be included in the book.
“(Nelson’s) article captured the essence of Hughes’ early years and, as soon as I read it, I knew it should be in the book,” Woodall said.
A chapter will be devoted to each of the seven Aggie soldiers who were awarded the nation’s prestigious medal.
“This is the first time their stories have been brought together in one book and the first time their stories are told in depth,.” Woodall said.
Nelson’s story on Hughes featured local resident John Borglund’s memories of the “band of Plasuela Street brothers.” Borglund and his brother Will grew up down the street from Hughes.
The story won first place in the Texas Press Association’s 2008 contest. Nelson was also asked to read the story at Veterans’ Day ceremonies in Refugio at the Veterans’ Memorial in Heritage Park.
