The following song was written by Florence Reece in 1931.  She was the wife of Sam Reece, a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky.  In 1931, the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners.  In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, Sheriff J. H. Blair and his men (hired by the mining company) illegally entered the Reece family home in search of Sam Reece.  Sam had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place.  That night, after the men had gone, Florence wrote the lyrics to "Which Side Are You On?" on a calendar that hung in the kitchen of her home.

Republicans Won’t Stop Their Assault on Unions Until Every State is Right-to-Work

Happy Labor Day!  Buy American and look for the union label.

I share Salty's anger at poor folks being driven from their homes and terrorized by mine owners and their henchmen. In the old days it was the company, their goons and government troops responsible for those actions. My own ancestors in Colorado were brutalized and killed by the mine owners and the U.S. Army. As a long-time union family I bristle at false accusations and the right's attempts to break up unions. As a member of the prison guard union, Salty should know that not all unions are run by Hoffa-like characters.

The coal industry is a filthy, polluting dinosaur of the past, but coal is still needed to power our factories and cities in many parts of this country. But their days are numbered and they know it as new technology will be replacing them. All the coal industry lobbyists aren't going to change that fact.

Retraining workers for new 21st century jobs is the answer. That's why Obama created the Jobs Bill; to train workers. You might ask yourself why Ryan voted against it, and why the Republicans in congress have shelved it until they can regain power. Is this about protecting Americans, or is it just about power and controlling the government? And even though I'm sure they're all really nice folks who love their children and country, I think the Republicans have shown us their true colors, and should be voted out of office as soon as possible before they can do any more damage.
