AUSTWELL – Mayor David Cann told his council and people in attendance Monday, June 10, that the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality issued a violation because it said the city hadn’t filed a Consumer Confidential Rule report last year. The CCR report informs residents about the quality of the town’s water. However, Mayor Cann said the TCEQ made a mistake. “We got hit for a violation. The TCEQ claims we did not submit a report last year,” he said. “We have a certified report. We resent it,” he added. The council also voted to advertise for sealed bids for the old Baptist Church building and property it sits on. The city was willed the property after the church’s membership fell off. Nadine Barber made the motion to start the sealed bids at $20,000. Cann said four people have expressed interest in the building, and all want to restore it. The council will consider bids at its July 8 meeting. The council also tabled deeding the alleyway on blocks 33, 34 and 35 so an attorney can advise whether the council can indeed deed the property over. City Secretary Jennifer Wright gave notice that she will take a new job with the Austwell-Tivoli school district. Her last day with the city will be July 31. The council agreed to post the positions of city secretary and a council seat in hopes of filling them.
