BEEVILLE – “It’s become a tradition,” said Daisy Hinojosa as her daughter, Christina Perez, set up the kitchen in their home to prepare for the Great American Bake Sale. This is Christina’s fourth year to raise money for the project that provides food for hungry children. Christina will open up her bake shop at 8 a.m. Friday, June 21, at 1414 W. Houston St. But interested supporters had better get up early and get there in time to make a purchase. She is usually sold out by 10 a.m. The project aims to help feed the one in five kids in America that does not have enough to eat. A 14-year-old A.C. Jones High School student, Christina began her involvement in the Great American Bake Sale at the age of nine. That first year, Christina raised $227 for the organization, but last year, she raised $1,087, with the help of one local donor. Christina has become a familiar face on KIII Channel 3 Domingo Live show by appearing with Beeville native Rudy Treviño and Barbi Leo to promote her annual sale. Christina said the Great American Bake Sale organizers are celebrating their 10th year this time, so the event is really pushing for activity. This year, Christina will be assisted by Maria Bastida, a local student who Christina has been mentoring. “One dollar can provide a hungry child with 10 meals,” Christina said. “Nine dollars can connect a child with healthy lunches during summer when school is out. Sixty-five dollars can provide a grab-n-go breakfast cart to an elementary school so that students can start their school day with a meal.” This year, Christina was asked by Great American Bake Sale employee Sylvia Vidal to share her story by making a video presentation to send to the event’s sponsors. She recently completed the video and sent it to the program organizers. Supporters of the bake sale include Domino Sugar, C&H Sugar, Duncan Hines, Family Circle, Food Network, Kmart and Solo Foods.
