As a result of the recent art exhibit in the Karnes City High School library, Sol Gonzales got paid. Sol, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mario Gonzales of Karnes City, created a pencil drawing of a pelican on the beach at Rockport from a photograph taken by her art teacher A. Cornell Green. Mrs. Michele Demonbren, special education teacher at KCHS, was excited about having the opportunity to purchase the 8”x10” drawing for $100. Sol’s drawing was the second of the year to be purchased. The first was a drawing of the Ruckman House in Helena drawn by Luis Balderas which had won a First Place Blue Ribbon at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Western Art Competition.

A few students from KCHS Project Graduation were surprised to receive a donation from Modern Woodmen of America. James Adams of Modern Woodmen of America presented the check to the students at their last meeting. While the students have worked hard at cookie sales, concession stands and basket raffles there are still funds needed to meet the goal to have a safe and alcohol and drug free night after graduation.

On Wednesday February 27, 2013 the Falls City fourth graders enjoyed a field trip to the capitol in Austin, Texas. The trip was organized by Karnes County Judge Barbara Najvar Shaw. With the assistance of the Falls City fourth grade teachers, the children brainstormed many great ideas about their school; these ideas were presented to each student in resolution form and signed by Representative Tim Kleinschmidt. In addition to the Capital Tour, the students enjoyed a Scavenger Hunt on the Capital Lawn, a catered lunch compliments of Hugo Gutierrez with Marathon Oil, and a performance by the world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders! A special thanks to Mrs. Bettin, Mrs. Blocker, and the Falls City fourth grade homeroom teachers, Mary Braniff and Suzanne Houdmann for all of their help in preparing and ensuring success of the trip. In addition, special thanks to MeLissa Nemecek and Representative Tim Kleinschmidt for their hospitality! The trip was a great learning experience and a great time was had by all.
