Farmers, ranchers and property owners in Bee County and beyond who want to slash their electricity costs and leave behind a smaller carbon footprint are invited to a conference on alternative energy next month.

The daylong conference will begin at 10 a.m. Dec. 2 at the San Domingo Ranch just outside of Beeville.

National radio commentator and two-time Texas Agricultural Commissioner Jim Hightower is scheduled to speak during the general session.

The conference is only offered to those who preregister, organizers say.

Registration cost is $100. Admission is $25 for youths and senior citizens.

The registration fee includes lunch.

The conference is sponsored by San Domingo Ranch and the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce.

The conference will kick off with a discussion by Land Use Experts LLC., called “winning support of projects with public support.”

After the general session, breakout sessions on alternative energy technology are scheduled.

The first three breakout sessions will follow the opening forum and will be held from 11:20 a.m. to 12:10 a.m.

They include:

• Saving the Earth by Using the Sun: Showing the Potential for Solar Power in Texas, presented by American Photovoltaics.

• A New Business Model for Wind Power Plants, presented by Scandia Wind Southwest and the Mariah Project.

• Algae Oil: The new Biofuel?, presented by the University of Texas.

During lunch, Hightower will speak on the topic of “Power flows from the grassroots,” a discussion on how new laws are developed regarding alternative energy and what steps property owners can take to have new laws developed regarding those technologies.

A second series of breakout sessions covering the same topics as the first breakout sessions will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for those who missed the first session.

The public is invited to an energy fair and exhibition to begin at 3 p.m.

“The conference is for anyone interested in the latest information on alternative energy, the impact of production and use,” said Eva Lengquist of Stockholm, Sweden, an industrial engineering and management student at Linköping Institute of Technology.

“The conference is about making contacts with people and companies experienced in alternative energy.”

Lengquist is interning at San Domingo Ranch through the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce and is helping to organize the conference.

“This (conference) is mainly for people who want to install solar, or wind or who are interested in the future of (these technologies) and want to learn more,” she said.

Marie Patricia Dougherty, owner of the San Domigo Ranch, said the alternative energy conference is the perfect opportunity for property owners to learn about “green” technologies or what they can do to become better stewards of the planet.

“I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to walk gently on the earth,” she said.

“As a land owner and as someone interested in alternative energy, I thought what a better way for everyone to get together and learn about these technologies.”

Dougherty, a member of the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce, said San Domingo Ranch specializes in bringing people together, learning about the latest of innovations and sponsoring conferences devoted to moving Texas forward into the 21st century.

She said she hopes the Dec. 2 conference will lead to similar alternative energy discussions in the future and help Texas become the leader in green technology.

To register for the conference or for more information, see details online at www.sandomingoranch.com.

The Conference was a successful Swedish/ American Chamber of Commerce event. Thank you for all coming and seeing for your selves what it was all about. Texas is poised to be first in the nation to embrace new technology for our future. One thing we learned -that grant money for our area has been appropriated for new tech and many other facts which were considerably encouraging.

Eva,who was our intern, did go back to Sweden as planned but not without making many friends. We hope she will return again someday, to see us. She did a beautiful job organizing this event together with the rest of us. Those who read the event information closely would know that.

The country of Sweden is a beautiful place, with a reputation for peace loving people and pluralistic ideals. Perhaps someday we might have the the opportunity to visit. I am grateful that most people know that. I am disappointed that so much misinformation was spread about. In the end we are all Citizens of the Same World.

Several comments were deleted from this thread. Please stay on topic. We want to keep this open but y'all need to work with us by being a bit more polite to each other. It is okay to disagree with someone but there is no need to call them names or make comments that could be construed as threatening.

Hi Dubious,

It is heartening to see more progressive views, such as conservation and alternative energy ideas, make their way to South Texas. Have you seen that windfarm on the way to Corpus? That is an awesome sight and very encouraging.

Hey, have a great Thanksgiving. I'll be giving thanks for the Democratic Party being in the majority and that the healthcare bill made it to the floor for debate.

Hi ya nunya,

The only ideas that the GOP has shown of late is adultery, corruption, and hate. Poor HellFire has even banned me from his blogs thus proving who the real fascist is. It is good to see positive events like this conference rather than the negative events that the GOP and Teabaggers convene. There may be hope for Beeville after all.....

oh Dubious, don't u know that everything that wasn't an idea of the GOP is socialism or communism or Facism or Muslim-ism?

A Certificate of Live Birth and a newspaper announcement isn't enough for the Birthers. The Queen Birther Orly Taitz got sanction in California and will soon lose her license over this stupidity and STILL the Birthers hold fast to the conspiracy theory.

They just can't take defeat gracefully ...or apparently at all.

Wrong again, HellFire. "WE" have a president who's father was a foreigner, just like your ancestors. You are so easy to best.
« HellFire wrote on Monday, Nov 23 at 06:38 AM »
Why not? You have a foreigner for president!!!

HAVE A GOP DAY!!!

Oh, I am going to continue using the electricity these wind farms generate, but I do not want people from other countries telling “me” or those around me to consume less electricity!

This is a way for her to just get some publicity, money, and fame! By attempting to persuade all of us consumers to consume less! We the people as individuals know what’s best for us!

We don’t need some foreign person telling us how to run and limit “our” electricity usage!

stOck,

Since when are new technologies socialism? If that is the case, then the wind farms in Taft and West Texas and elsewhere are proof that "socialism" has already taken root and you are a part of it by using the electricity these wind farms generate. Perhaps you should get a generator and live in a cave....

She said “I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to walk gently on the earth,”

I say to her; Go back to Sweden! Get a real job. Instead of attempting to persuade people in Texas to limit our electricity usage here in Texas!

She is usurping our money to fund her campaign to persuade everyone to force others to use less electricity.

I like using up electricity for my needs; I do not want to limit my electricity! I know everyone feels the same!

Texas is not a socialist state nor is America!

If you want to spread your socialist agenda [Limit the people’s electricity usage] do so “in your own country” not here in Texas!

Take that idea back to Sweden!
