Mrs. Opiela was born on Feb. 17, 1922 in Panna Maria to Ignatz Pawelek and Geneva (Swintek) Pawelek. She was of Catholic faith and was a former member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Kenedy and was a current member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Panna Maria.
Survivors include her sister Betty Moczygemba of San Antonio; sons, Frankie Opiela of Karnes City and Tommy Opiela of San Antonio; daughters, Lillian Martin of Karnes City, Irene Elliott of Kenedy, Helen West of Karnes City, Bernice (Marcus) Syring of Karnes City, Jeanette Byrd of Victoria and Shirley (Nathan) Bartkoviak of Allen; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Johnny J. Opiela, second husband, Anton Kotzur; her parents Ignatz and Geneva Pawelek; son, Virgil W. Opiela; brothers, Vincent Pawelek, Isidore Pawelek, Sr., Florian Pawelek; sisters, Annie Opiela, Teresa Kingston and Rosie Wiatek.
Visitation began at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at Rhodes Funeral Home with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. that evening at the funeral home.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Panna Maria with Father Wieslaw Iwaniec officiating.
Pallbearers were Dwayne Elliott, Matthew Sullins, Tyler Piskor, Billy Joe Opiela, Travis Buehring and Jordan Buehring. Honorary Pallbearers were Frankie Opiela Jr., Winston Byrd and William Byrd.
