The members of Gamma Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International were able to do some early Christmas shopping when they met at Moreno Junior High Library in Beeville on Nov. 3. The activity of the day was the chapter’s annual auction to raise funds for the book grants and grants-in-aid awarded by Gamma Omicron to young women going into the educational field. Members provided a variety of home baked, hand crafted or gift items for auction, and auctioneer Betty Bleeker made sure the bidding was lively. Holly Polasek and Sabrina Lewallen assisted Betty by displaying the items as they came up for bid.

26 members and three guests – DKG Area 4 Coordinator Barbara Anders, Loretta Burge and Lauren Richmond - were welcomed to the meeting by the Beeville C Group and served a delicious brunch. Prior to the auction, Chapter President Lana Massengale conducted the business meeting. Erie Head offered a meditation based on Psalms 138:8 and Betty Thornton led the members in the pledge to the American flag. Carol Williams, in the absence of Membership Chairman Karen Thornton, presented 2 recommendations for membership. The nominees were approved in a vote and will be initiated at the December 7th meeting if they accept the offer for membership.

Jan Anderson reported on the World Fellowship Program which makes awards to women educators from around the world so that they may study for advanced degrees in the United States and Canada. Notes of encouragement were signed by the chapter members for the 2 recipients of this year’s World Fellowship Awards who are attending universities in Texas. One educator (from Zambia) is attending Texas State University and the other recipient, from Mongolia, is working on her Master’s degree at Texas A & M University. 2nd Vice-President Pam Kerlick handed out new Chapter Yearbooks to the members. Lana recognized those members celebrating October birthdays, and called on Erie Head to read brags from the Brag Bag, giving members a chance to share in the good news of their Gamma Omicron sisters. When chapter business was concluded, the spirited fundraiser began.

Attending from Bee and Live Oak counties were Erie Head, Margie Ann Awalt, Lana Massengale, Evelyn Jeanes, Pam Jeanes, Betty Bleeker, Doris Kuhnert, Sara Jaure, Catherine Thornton, Betty Thornton, Carol Williams, Falba Jo Roberts, Myrtle Lucke, Marie Meadows, Frieda Hartzendorf, and Alice Whitley. Karnes County members Gretchen Dupnik, Susie Kotara, Cathy Morgan, Frances Eckols, Jan Anderson, Sabrina Lewallen, Holly Polasek, Pam Kerlick, Pam Burge, and Donna Patton were in attendance.
