Recently, I held my annual Great American Bake Sale to help end childhood hunger. I would like to thank all my family, friends, customers and community members who supported this cause.
Thanks to Gary Kent, the Bee-Pic and the Domingo Live! show for promoting the event. Thank you to my little partner, Maria Bastida, whom I mentor, for assisting in promoting, recruiting and baking. A special thanks to my mom for supporting me in all I do.
The morning began bright and early as our early bird neighbors came in with a smile, ready to pick their sweet treats. Some friends even brought us breakfast biscuits and tacos. Thanks to my dad for the fresh pot of coffee, which encouraged customers to dine in and enjoy their treats with us.
Our doors were wide open for La Amistad Adult Care and Activity Center, Angel Care Ambulance Service, Benavidez Business Center, family, friends and community members, as each customer filled their box of cupcakes, lemon bars, brownies, gumballs and cookies. Even a nice gentleman from Skidmore, who had read the article in the newspaper, came to deliver a donation with a special message. Also, thanks to my little neighborhood friends who rode in with their bikes to grab the last cupcake.
As the bake sale was drawing to a close, my angel walked in again – Mickie Ochoa, co-owner of Angel Care. She picked up some cakes and then handed me a check donation of $800, along with a smile and a hug. Thank you, Angel Care and Ms. Mickie, for being my angel.
I am proud to announce that a total of $1,087 went to this cause, because family, friends and this community came together. According to the Great American Bake Sale/Share our Strength calculations, $1 can create 10 meals, so we created $10,870 meals! Thanks, everyone, for sharing your strength with me!
