The Chamber Singers are an ensemble dedicated to the intimate vocal artistry that only a small choral group can achieve. The choir was founded in 1962 by Robert H. Young who served on the Baylor Music Faculty until 1993. The repertoire of the Chamber Singers ranges from Renaissance to contemporary, both sacred and secular. They were prominently featured in the PBS special “Christmas at Baylor.”
The choir is under the direction of Dr. Alan Raines, the director of choral activities at Baylor. Dr. Raines is a frequent guest conductor and sought after clinician with choruses throughout the United States. Previously, he was the director of choral activities and associate professor of music at Stetson University.
A recipient of the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in choral conducting at UCLA, Raines served as the assistant conductor of the Angeles Chorale while as a student of Donald Neuen. Prior appointments include the University of La Verne and Georgia State University.
Raines’ professional engagements have taken him throughout most of the major cities in the United States, Canada and abroad with guest appearances at Moscow State University, the London Virtuosi in Wells, U.K., and Musica Angelica of Los Angeles. He is the first American invited to guest conduct the Chonan City Choir and Orchestra in Chonan City, South Korea. His schedule includes appearances in Washington, Michigan, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee this fall alone.
The concert at 3 p.m. will feature works by four English composers: Vaughan Williams, Rutter, Stanford and Wilby. St. Philip’s organist John L. Blackburn will improvise on a theme by Blake Clark, a junior composition major at Baylor. A chamber orchestra made up of Baylor instrumentalists will also accompany the choir during the performance of John Rutter’s Requiem.
The concert is free to the public, with a donation being taken to support the Baylor University Choral Endowment Program.
