The Bee County Adult Literacy Council recently received a grant from H.E.B. in the amount of $300. The funds are to be used for the volunteer training workshop which has now been rescheduled for the spring.

Recent approvals

United Way has approved the council for the Combined Federal Campaign. This means that federal employees can donate to the Literacy Council.

The council has also been approved for the state employee charitable campaign.

Tutors and students

Four additional tutors have volunteered to serve. There are 15 students currently being tutored. Literacy volunteers are needed to teach adults the basic skills of listening, speaking and writing. Call Dolores Perez, coordinator, at 354-5335, if you are interested in being a volunteer tutor.

Volunteer recognition

The Bee County Adult Literacy Council is proud to recognize Sally Baynum, Sylvia Guerrero, Mary Lou Longoria, Mary Puga and Jane Smith for their extraordinary volunteer work within our community. Their resumes show that they are teachers inspired to give the adult students the gift of reading.

Children’s books

needed

Donations of new or used children’s books are needed for the children of the adults that participate in the Bee County Adult Literacy Program as well as other children in the community. Books may be dropped off at any of IBC Bank’s three locations; 100 E. Houston inside H.E.B., 802 E. Houston St. or 312 N. St. Mary’s St. For more information, call Monica Elliott at 358-8700.

These books will provide the opportunity for the adults in the literacy program to read to their children.
