Bee County grand indicted a Beeville man on Oct. 29 in connection with an incident that allegedly left a child with serious injuries.
Cruz Favela III was named in four counts of injury to a child by omission, all third degree felonies, and two counts of injury to a child, also third degree felonies.
Beeville Police Department investigators alleged that Favela failed to restrain a woman on Aug. 2, 2008, as the woman struck a girl under the age of 14 with her hands and with an unknown object.
The defendant also was charged with striking the girl himself with an unknown object on her back and pubic bone.
According to the indictment, the victim suffered a broken right arm and a broken thumb in the incident.
Third degree felonies are punishable by a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine of $10,000, upon conviction.
District Judge Joel Johnson set bond on the suspect at $7,500.
Others indicted by grand jurors included:
•Sandra DeLaGarza in a two-count indictment on charges of theft and theft by check, both third degree felonies.
Investigators claimed that the defendant paid for a car on Sept. 20, 2007, with a $2,000 check for which she had insufficient funds and then transferred title of the vehicle.
Bond was $3,000.
•Jess Hunter Hollon on a charge of driving while intoxicated, third offense or more.
The offense is a third degree felony.
According to police, Hollon was driving while under the influence of alcohol on Sept. 11.
He had previous DWI convictions on March 8, 2005, in San Patricio County and on May 22, 2008, in Nueces County.
Bond was $2,000.
•Fred Wesley French on a charge of bail jumping, a third degree felony.
According to District Court Bailiff Bill Lazenby, French failed to appear on court on Oct. 20 on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance, less than one gram. He was out on a $4,000 bond at the time.
Bail for this offense was set at $10,000.
Alfonzo Garces on a charge of DWI with a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle.
The offense is a state jail felony punishable by a term of up to two years in a state jail facility and a $10,000 fine.
Beeville police alleged that Garces committed the offense on June 1.
Bond was $2,000.
•Melissa Ann Mercer on a charge of debit card abuse, a state jail felony.
Police investigators claimed that the defendant used another person’s MasterCard on July 28.
Bond was $1,000.
•Melody Ann Garcia on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, less than one gram, a state jail felony.
Bee County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the defendant after finding what they suspected was cocaine in her possession on April 16.
Bond was $3,000.
