CALALLEN — The host Ladycats turned a one-point deficit in the fourth quarter into a seven-point win on Friday night as they defeated the Beeville varsity basketball squad 49-42.

The Lady Trojans started sluggishly and put up six first quarter points while the Ladycats hit for 11 markers to take an early five-point advantage. The Beeville offense fed off its defense in the second quarter. A few Calallen turnovers turned into Beeville points as the Lady Trojans outscored their hosts by 10 points, 19-9, to take a 25-20 lead into the locker rooms.

The paced slowed in the second half. The Ladycats were able to scratch four points off the Beeville lead by capturing the third period 12-8. It was a 33-32 margin heading into the final eight minutes.

The Lady Trojan offense and defense were not up to par in the final quarter, and the Ladycats were hot from the floor, hitting three treys down the stretch to put the Lady Trojans on the wrong side of the final score. The hosts hit for 17 fourth quarter points, and the Lady Trojans mustered just nine markers.

“Our offense was not clicking and we were off on the defensive end. We have to have everyone involved,” said head coach Katina Walker.

“It has to be a team effort on both ends of the court.”

Victoria Elizalde recorded 30 points in the loss and produced a very nice “double-double” with 13 rebounds in the game. Ciara Garcia followed with six points. Brennan Holder added four, and Theresa Amador was held to two points.

The loss puts the Lady Trojans at 25-8 on the season and 7-4 in District 30-4A play with just one game remaining on their schedule. The Beeville girls entertained Tuloso-Midway on Tuesday night to finish their regular season.

The Lady Trojans are the second place team in district and will play the third place team in District 29-4A in a bi-district match-up on Feb. 11 or 12. An opponent and site are yet to be determined.
