Crayton was the owner and President of Hunter Petroleum, Inc. He served on the Wells Fargo Board of Directors, the Board of Independent Oil Association, and the Petroleum Registry. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Alice, Texas, where he worked on the vestry. He loved participating in Team Roping events, watching the Texas Aggies play football on Saturday afternoons, and spending time with his family and friends.

A memorial service was held at the Hunter Family Cemetery in Beeville, Texas on May 3, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. Take Highway 59 east towards Goliad and go approximately 2 miles to Dickerson Road. Turn onto Dickerson Road for approximately 8/10ths of a mile to Handley Lane which will be prominently marked. It is suggested that sensible shoes or boots be worn for this outdoor setting.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dean Ash Memorial Scholarship or the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Alice. The Dean Ash Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 to honor Dean Ash, an outstanding scholar-athlete at Alice High School. Dean greatly admired his cousin, Crayton Hunter, who taught him the sport of team roping. Each year from 1992-2005, Crayton sponsored a team roping to raise money for the Dean Ash scholarship. Through his efforts, the scholarship has awarded over $150,000 to twenty-two deserving scholar-athletes at Alice High School. The address to the scholarship and church are:

Dean Ash Scholarship C/O Bette and Joe Ash, 4973 N. Hwy. 281, Alice, Texas 78332.
