The members of Gamma Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International had the opportunity to reflect on their own “new teacher” experiences as Mandi Wheat spoke about her first six weeks in the classroom at the group’s Oct. 3 meeting in Karnes City.

Miss Wheat, a May graduate of Baylor University, is now a third-grade teacher at Runge Elementary School. Gamma Omicron members were impressed with Mandi’s enthusiasm and her desire to meet the needs of all of her students.

Prior to her presentation, Tammy Rands reported on the numbers of teachers leaving the profession, reinforcing the idea that mentoring programs are needed to help those new to the profession. Gretchen Dupnik presented information regarding alternative education programs, and chapter members who came into the profession by this method also contributed. Chapter members also shared about their “homework” assignment. At the September meeting, program chairman Denese Martin had asked the members to seek out the new-to-the-district teachers on their respective campuses and help them out.

After chapter president Jan Anderson rang a school bell to call the meeting to order, Melinda Wheat gave a meditative thought on teaching and mentoring to set the theme for the day’s meeting. Phyllis Vaughan led the group in the pledge to the flag.

During committee reports, members enjoyed viewing a video created by Susie Kotara on the Alpha State Convention held this summer in Corpus Christi. Betty Thornton, membership chairman, recognized members with October birthdays and read membership nominations which the group voted on. In a drawing for door prizes, Pam Kerlick and Marie Ortiz-Fernandez were the recipients. Donna Patton, scholarship chairman, reminded the members of next month’s auction. The annual auction is held to raise funds to provide scholarships for young women who are high school seniors and college juniors and plan to become teachers. A quilt raffle is also a part of the fundraiser.

The Karnes City/ Runge members had provided a wonderful brunch for the members to enjoy and had decorated the tables at the Karnes City High School cafeteria with pictures and objects carrying out the theme “Believe, Explore, Learn and Lead.” At the head table, an arrangement which included a book on Christopher Columbus emphasized the theme.

The members concluded the meeting with the Delta Kappa Gamma song. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.
