Ernest Jackson Plant Jr., 71, of George West, died Thursday, June 14, 2012.

Mr. Plant was born Sept. 21, 1940, in Luling to Ernest Sr. and Stella Price Plant. He was an entrepreneur with many successful companies to his credit and spent the first part of his life in the oil field working on drilling rigs, managing egg farms and processing facilities before beginning a career with Church’s Chicken in their early years. With Church’s, he was responsible for construction of all new stores and also did the same for Popeye’s Fried Chicken in their early days. He had a series of his own successful ventures, including E.P. Enterprises, the construction company that built more than 1,000 Church’s Chicken stores all over the world. In 1984, he started E.P.M.P. manufacturing company, one of the 40 largest sheet metal companies in the United States. In 1997, he began another venture in the ranching business.

He was a Mason and a member of Guadalupe Lodge #109 in Seguin. He loved being outdoors, working, hunting and fishing and was involved with the George West 4-H Archery program as a lead instructor and had coached and managed several teams with the Live Oak County Little League.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Douglas Plant and Carl Plant Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Cindi Plant; daughters, Teresa (David) Van Booven and Cassie (Jared) Koehler, both of Seguin, Vicki (Jeff) Sauer of San Antonio and Celina Plant of George West; son, Clinton (Sharon) Plant of San Antonio; brothers, Wesley (Mary Louise) Plant and Donald (Judye) Plant; grandchildren, Samantha, Devin and Madison Van Booven, Hayley Caldwell, Shelby Plant, Stormius Sauer, Bryan Valadez, Kaylee Freeborn and Jackson Koehler; sisters-in-law, Betty Plant and Geri Plant; and multiple nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A celebration of life service was held Sunday, June 24, at Hillcrest Assembly of God Church in Seguin at 2 p.m. A Masonic ceremony concluded the service with a reception following at the church.
