A 4-year-old Beeville boy was killed early Friday and his 33-year-old mother was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 59 west of Goliad.
The victims were identified as Emika Moya, a teacher at Goliad High School, and her son, Luca.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by Goliad County Justice of the Peace Sylvia Valdez.
The mother was rushed to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville with a broken leg, internal injuries and a punctured lung.
She was later flown to a hospital in Corpus Christi for treatment.
According to a report filed by Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Fritz, the Moyas were eastbound in a 2009 Nissan when a westbound 18-wheeler, driven by Mark Johnson of Houston, struck the vehicle on the passenger side of the Nissan.
According to the report, the highway was blanketed by dense fog at the time of the accident.
Officers at the scene reported that the Moya vehicle was in the eastbound lane when it was struck. Investigators have not determined a cause of the accident.
Luca Moya was taken to Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville.
The report said the child was properly strapped into a car seat at the time of the accident.
Johnson reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
Emergency personnel from both Goliad and Bee counties were at the scene and the highway was closed to through traffic for more than three hours.
