The Varsity Girls’ Doubles team consisting of Caysi Holt and Taylor Brown dominated the competition Friday claiming victory over Runge’s Flores/Phillips (8-1), Somerset’s Galvez/Mitchell (9-7), Poteet’s Lopez/Herrera (8-1), and finally Dilley’s state qualifiers Zepeda/Rodriguez (8-4). Holt and Brown set a great goal early in the day and set their minds to achieve it through good, solid teamwork.

In other girls doubles action, Amy Garza and Salina Ruiz claimed the 2nd place consolation win with defeats over Karnes City, Poteet, and Luling. Garza and Ruiz make a great team that carries a high personal playing standard.

After a first-round bye, Sarah Whitley defeated Luling’s Gonzalez in girls singles before falling to the eventual tournament champion from Marion.

In the boys’ draw, Alex Combs and Nathan Morin paired up to claim the consolation championship after defeating players from Jourdanton, Runge, and two teams from Lytle. Combs and Morin played concrete tennis throughout the day and it paid off in the end.

In mixed doubles, Preston Koenig and Mary Cansino showed great solidarity and played to win 2nd place in the consolation bracket beating teams from Somerset and Marion. Koenig and Cansino fell short in the final match in a close tiebreaker (8-9).

In boys singles, Justin Bray declared 4th place after conquering Lytle’s Garcia, Cuero’s Spears, and Runge’s Peake before collapsing to tournament champion and state qualifier Jordan Jackson.

Mario Rodriguez also played boys singles beating Runge’s Villanueva (8-0) before losing to Lytle’s Garcia in a close match (6-8). Both Bray and Rodriguez played very tough opponents throughout the day but remained focused and played competitively.

After the Stockdale tournament, the tennis teams traveled to compete in the Port Aransas tennis tournament on Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9, but after hours of rain delay and eventually more rain, the tourney was canceled.

The tennis teams will travel to Runge this week (March 21-23) to participate in the Tiebreaker Round Robin.
