Only a few players on the JV team were able to compete on Thursday, and those players proved their potential on the court. In girls’ doubles, Amy Garza and Salina Ruiz paired up to defeat teams from Industrial, Yoakum, Calhoun and eventually, St. Joseph’s to claim the tournament championship.
In mixed doubles, Garrett Pawlik and Catarina Ruiz declared third place after defeating Cuero’s Bustos and Headley. Zeliene Brown defeated Port Aransas’ Vansha Patel 8-1 before falling to Victoria West’s Arianna Guzman 2-8. Cody Bartlett played an intense first round tiebreaker match against Runge’s Ryan Sausedo, losing 7-8, then later fell to Woodsboro’s Starr 4-8.
In Varsity competition on Friday, Mario Rodriguez defeated Aransas Pass’ Zach Kelley (8-1) before being defeated by the eventual tournament champion, Ryder Billo (Goliad). Nathan Morin and Zac McAlister paired up in boys’ doubles to beat a team from Edna after falling to Cuero’s Beer/Dobbins. Wesley Iley and Jesse Cansino also teamed up in boys’ doubles to claim fourth place after defeating teams from Goliad and Yoakum, while Tara Liska (in girls singles) fell to Industrial’s Lewis in a close tiebreaker match, but later won against Gonzales’ Diaz in a consolation match. Sarah Whitley claimed fourth with a win against Goliad’s Vaughn.
In girls’ doubles action, Caysi Holt and Taylor Brown overpowered Edna’s Madina and Serna before falling in a close match to Goliad’s Brown and Hale. In mixed doubles, Preston Koenig and Mary Cansino grouped up to claim third place after thumping teams from Aransas Pass, Cuero, and Edna.
