Jobless rate rises slightly, but better than state, U.S.

BEEVILLE – The unemployment rate in January rose slightly from the previous month but is still better than the rates for both the state and the country.

Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, which compiles the monthly figures, reports the January unemployment rate for the county as 5.7 percent, up from 5.6 percent the month before, and down from 7.4 percent a year ago.

The statewide figure for January of this year was 5.8 percent, up from 5.6 percent last December and down from 7.0 percent a year ago.

The national unemployment rate for January was 7 percent, up from 6.5 percent last December, down from 8.5 percent the previous year.

Both Live Oak and Refugio counties registered 3.6 percent unemployment in January. Live Oak was up from 3.5 percent in December but down from 4.5 percent a year ago; Refugio was up from 3.4 percent in December and down from 4.7 percent a year ago.

The unemployment rate in McMullen County in January was 2.7 percent, up from 2.4 percent in December but down from 3.2 percent a year ago.
