One of the new buses is to replace the bus that was totaled in an accident that occurred on Feb. 15 of this year. The district received an insurance check for $34,000 and the money will go toward the new bus purchase.
An additional bus is also being purchased in order to be used as a backup to satisfy the needs for certain days when an additional bus is needed, such as for school trips or to take the place of another bus that is being serviced/repaired.
District officials say that the additional bus will allow the district to be prepared for the change that has come regarding an inter-local transportation agreement that KCISD had with Floresville ISD.
“For the past five years KCISD has received transportation services through an inter-local agreement with Floresville ISD,” said Superintendent Jeanette Winn. “In turn, Floresville contracted the services from STS (Student Transportation Specialists). Any time that our district has needed more buses than our own fleet supplied, we always had access to extra STS buses.”
According to Winn, next year the district will once again operate its transportation services through an inter-local agreement with Floresville ISD. However, Floresville ISD will not be contracting with STS. Therefore, the extra buses will not be available for the district to use, and district officials want to make sure there is an adequate supply to run bus routes and fulfill extracurricular trip requirements at the same time.
Also at the meeting, the board approved to change the date of the July board meeting from July 15 to July 10, in order to bring better timing and convenience for issues of employing new personnel.
