Friday’s encounter in Victoria had the Warriors score crooked numbers in three innings, but they were big crooked numbers. The Lady Trojans gave up five runs in the second, four runs in the third and another five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Trojans could not keep up with that kind of production. Beeville scored one run in the top of the third and anther two runs in the fifth before the Warrior put the game away on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the frame.
“We did not play very well defensively against Victoria West. Ortega and Puente accounted for six of our eight hits,” said head coach Jose Flores.
“We must be more balanced on offense if we are going to win games. I know our best softball is ahead of us.”
Eddika Ortega and Lynn Puente were a perfect 3-3 at the plate for the Lady Trojans. Ortega scored twice. Mackenzie De La Garza scored the other Beeville run. Rebekah Mendoza picked up one base hit and a RBI for the Lady Trojans. Puente also knocked in one run. Amanda Gonzales collected the other Beeville base hit.
The Lady Trojans helped the Warriors with seven errors committed in the game.
On Saturday, the Lady Trojans played in Sinton and the Lady Pirates scored early and often as they put up three runs in each of the first two innings against the Lady Trojans. A single run in the third made it a 7-0 ball game after just three complete innings. The Lady Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn a 9-0 advantage going into the final two innings.
“We came and played tight defensively against Sinton. We seemed to settle down after the third inning,” said Flores.
“We finally put together a good inning in the top of the sixth.”
The Beeville girls had scoring opportunities in the fourth and fifth frames as they loaded the bases in both innings with less than two outs. The local girls failed to score in either of the frames.
The Lady Trojans finally broke into the scoring column in the top of the sixth. Beeville pushed across four runs in the sixth to close the gap to 9-4. The Beeville girls failed to score in the seventh and the final was a 9-4 victory for the Lady Pirates.
Six Lady Trojans had one hit apiece in the loss. Rebecca De Los Santos, Taylor Castillo, Ortega, Puente, Alyssa Bates and Brianna Gobel all hit safely in the game. Gonzales picked up two base hits and a RBi in the game. De Los Santos also contributed a timely hit for two RBIs. Bates also drove in a run for Beeville.
“I feel we played our best softball of the season in the final four innings of the game. We made plays on defense that good teams make,” said Flores.
The Lady Trojans will host Victoria East on Friday.
