Chase Whetsel, a gifted Refugio Bobcat running back, suffered only minor injuries after his truck left the highway and crashed into trees Friday morning at 9 a.m. between Refugio and Woodsboro.

DPS Sgt. Guillermo Mora said Whetsel hit a slick patch on the road and went into a side skid into the bar ditch where he crashed into the trees approximately three miles north of Refugio.

“He was taken to the hospital to be checked out,” Mora said.

The DPS trooper cited Whetsel for unsafe speed.

The highway was slick from an early morning shower.

Refugio head coach Jason Herring rushed to the Refugio Memorial Hospital emergency room.

“I stayed with him until his daddy got there,” Herring said. “He was shook up and scratched from the glass but he didn’t have any serious injuries.”
