The George West Longhorns proved all the pre-season media predictions correct by winning the 31-2A District Championship in Three Rivers this past Friday night. The ‘Horns came into the game favorites and took the 42-0 win in typical Longhorn fashion.

Shannon Taylor was the Longhorn of the night with four touchdowns and a conversion to lead the ‘Horns scoring. Taylor finished the night with 170 yards on 18 carries.

The first score for the Longhorns came after a fumble by the Bulldogs on their opening drive. After several short gains the Longhorns moved to the Bulldog one-yard line with 1:52 left in the first quarter. Taylor scored and Ty Jimmerson kicked the point after.

The Bulldogs came back on the next drive and suffered a penalty that first appeared to be pass interference with two flags being thrown. After the referees’ consultation it was ruled the pass was uncatchable and it was a Bulldog personal foul. This backed up the Bulldogs 15-yards to the George West 47. Two penalties later for the ‘Dogs and the touchdown was out of reach. John Morgan Ross came in to punt.

With 6:27 left in the half Taylor scored from the 5-yard line. The attempt for two failed and the Longhorns led 13-0.

On their next possession the Bulldogs drive to the Longhorn 9-yard line and then are penalized for holding. The penalty is refused and the longhorns take over as the half ends.

The third quarter was all Longhorn as the Bulldogs went flat after the half. Taylor scored twice more in the third quarter, once on a 64-yard run and then again on a 1-yard push. Cayleb Holt scored once on a 55 yard run and Albert Gamez scored on a 21 yard run. Gamez passed to Ty Jimmerson and Shannon Taylor for a conversion points. Jimmerson went 1-1 on his point after attempts in the quarter.

The Bulldogs made two offensive drives in the third quarter but could not get into he end zone. As the period ended the Bulldogs regained some momentum but it would prove to be too little too late.

The fourth quarter for the Bulldogs was thwarted again by penalties and errors. Taylor, Holt and Gamez added more to their total yardage in the fourth quarter. Senior Andrew Sotello (2 carries for 5 yards) came in with less than a minute to play in the game. With 25 seconds left on the clock Gamez takes a knee to end the game.

The Longhorns are undefeated for the season. A 10-0 season is a rare thing and it a true testament to the hard work and dedication for the Longhorn players, coaches and support staff.

San Diego will be the first round opponent for the Longhorns. The game will be played Friday, November 13 in San Diego starting at 7:30.

The Bulldogs finish the season 8-2 and 5-1 in district play. The District Runner-up Bulldogs will face an opponent from their preseason, Rivera. In that game against Rivera was an 18-0 victory for the Bulldogs.

Game time will be Friday, November 13 at 7:30 at the West Oso stadium in Corpus Christi.
