MMS athletes compete at district track meet

PORTLAND – The Moreno Middle School track athletes did a lot of running and jumping at their recent district track meet to bring back several medals for their performances.

Seventh-grade boys

The 400-meter relay team of Isaiah Moreno, Jeremiah Martinez, Dalton Corpus and Brian Lucio finished fourth. In the 800-meter event, the same squad placed third.

In the 100-meter dash, Trojan Brandon Limonez was third. Limonez captured the district title in the 400-meter dash with a first place finish. He placed second in the long jump with teammate Corpus coming in third. Corpus was sixth in the triple jump.

The seventh-grade boys finished with 51 points at the meet, good for sixth place, and the squad brought home eight medals.

Seventh-grade girls

Lady Trojan Paige Knapp placed fifth in the tough 2,400-meter run with a time of 10:22. The 400-meter sprint relay team of Kailey Perez, Kaitlin Pelitire, Victoria Trevino and Kayla Johns finished fifth with a time of 53.22. The 800-meter relay foursome of Perez, Pelitire, Briana Garza and Johns finished second with a time of 2:00.

In the 400-meter run, MMS Lady Trojan Daniella Perez placed sixth in 1:13. Johns placed second in the long jump with a leap of 13-11.5 while Pelitire was fourth with a jump of 13-10. Johns placed fourth in the triple jump with a 26-8.5 effort. Pelitire won the pole vault by clearing the bar at 7-0.

Eighth-grade boys

Trojan Derrick Carroll placed fourth in the 2,400-meter run and was first in the 800-meter event to claim the district championship. The 400-meter relay team of Kevin Ibarra, Matthew Guerra, Andrew Gutierrez and Brent Romine captured second place.

Romine placed second in the 100-meter dash for the Beeville boys. Kyle Villarreal was sixth in the sprint event. The 800-meter relay team of Ibarra, Romine, Michael Virata and Guerra took third at the meet. Andrew Gutierrez won a first place medal and the 400-meter dash district title for the Trojans.

The mile (or 1,600-meter) relay team of Guerra, Gutierrez, Ibarra and Carroll were the first to cross the finish line to lay claim to the district championship title in that event. Virata placed fifth in the long jump and RJ Gonzales was sixth in the discus.

Overall the eighth-grade boys finished with 84 points, which was good for fourth place in district, and they brought home 15 medals.

“These kids did everything we ask them to do this track season. They are hard workers with positive attitudes. My coaches and I would like to congratulate these young men on a great season, and we look forward to see them grow as athletes in the future,” said MMS coach Pat Flores.

Eighth-grade girls

In the 2,400-meter run, Lady Trojan Heaven Rodriguez placed fifth with a time of 10 minutes flat. Maria Navarro also placed fifth in the 800-meter event for the MMS girls in 2:52.44. In the 100-meter hurdles, Alyssa Silva placed sixth with a time of 18.52.

The 400-meter relay team of Mitch Chavarria, Natalie Rivas, Keely Taylor and Makayla Martinez placed fourth in 57.58. The same foursome finished fifth in the 800-meter relay with a time of 2:03.50.

In the 1,600-meter run, Lady Trojan Heaven Rodriguez placed fifth in 6:31.65 while teammate Maria Navarro was right behind her in sixth with a time of 6:32.65. Chavarria placed first for a district title in the long jump with a leap of 14-6.25. The 1,600-meter relay team of Chavarria, Martinez, Claudia Carranco and Natalie Rivas placed fourth in 4:53.16.
