The seventh-grade team captured two wins, as did the eighth-grade squads, as both returned to Beeville with consolation bracket titles.
The younger Lady Trojans were dealt an opening round loss by the G-P Wildcats, 17-14 in close contest.
The setback did nothing to the team’s confidence as they proceeded to roll to two straight wins. The MMS girls defeated Orange Grove 24-14 and then demolished Robstown 27-5 in the finals.
“Kayla Johns really stepped up in the last game against Robstown, leading the Lady Trojans with 15 points. Kaitlyn Pelitire and Sadie Salazar both put a lot of pressure on the guards in the last two games, which made for some quick points for the Lady Trojans,” said coach Michelle Mertz.
Coach Mertz has seen the seventh-grade squad improve in practice and over the three-game tourney.
“I am really looking forward to the rest of the season with these girls. They have already progressed so much, just in these three games, I can’t wait to see what these girls can accomplish in the next several weeks,” Mertz said.
The eighth-grade team also lost to Gregory-Portland in the tournament’s opening round. The young Lady Wildcats captured a 32-17 victory.
“Nerves got the best of us Friday night in our first game of the season. The girls played hard and never gave up the entire game, but bad passes and bad decisions hurt us,” said coach Linda Luna.
The Lady Trojans bounced right back and settled into their game to record two straight wins. Tuloso-Midway was the first victim as the Lady Trojans chased the Cherokees 32-14.
In the consolation bracket finals, the Beeville girls earned a nine-point win, 31-22, over Calallen to claim the title.
Alyssa Silva led the Lady Trojans in scoring for the tournament, pouring in 24 points for the three games. Maricella Gonzales followed with 23 markers, and Briana Bunton added 14 in the three tilts. Claudia Carranco hit for eight points, and Michaela Chavarria recorded seven markers. Cierra Gonzales contributed three points and Alyssa Medina made one free throw.
“We’re going to work on our plays and have those work for us. We’re going to improve on defense and communication,” Luna said.
“This is a determined, hard-working group of girls, eager to learn and wanting to win.”
The MMS girls on the A teams will compete at a tournament in Victoria on Nov. 30-Dec. 1, while the B team squads will play at a Flour Bluff Hornet tournament on the same dates.
