The eighth-grade “A” team had a close first game but came out with a three-point win, 25-22, over the Lady Bucs for a 1-0 lead in the best of three match. The second game was not quite so close with the Lady Trojans earning a 25-19 win to sweep the match.
The win gives the Lady Trojans a 7-5 overall record and they are now 2-1 in district play.
“We did very well transitioning from defense to offense. We did not have many balls hitting the floor,” said MMS coach Holly Vasquez.
The Lady Trojans did well in the service game as Heather McKinney led the Beeville ladies with 11 points, six coming in a row against the Lady Bucs. Theresa Amador came up with six points off her serve while Brennan Holder added five points while serving. Cori Moore also contributed five service points. Taylor Lawson added two points and Randi Maupin got one for the young Lady Trojans while serving.
Coach Holly Vasquez acknowledged the great passing by Anisa Cantu and Amanda Gonzales that helped set up several points for the Beeville girls. Reba Trejo kept things moving on defense and offense with some good hustle, according to Vasquez.
The eighth-grade “B” team was also victorious on Monday night. The Lady Trojans improved to 4-1 overall and sport a 2-1 district record.
The Beeville girls swept the first two tilts by the scores of 25-19 and 25-17 over the Lady Bucs.
“The Lady Trojans did a great job, especially with their serves,” said coach Sona Cano.
“It is a pleasure to coach such an enthusiastic bunch of ladies.”
The seventh-grade “A” team pushed the visitors to three games before the Lady Bucs came out on top in the match The scores were 18-25, 25-13 and 17-25. The loss drops the Lady Trojans’ record to 2-8 on the season and 0-3 in district.
The MMS girls bounced back in game two after the opening loss and got their service and defensive games back on the right track for a dominating 25-13 win. The Lady Bucs earned a close game win for the match as both teams played good volleyball. Lady Trojan Marissa Rodriguez served for five straight points and 12 points overall. Jasmine Soliz hit for five points in the match while Priscilla Koenig and Lynnzey Garcia added three points. Brittany Torralva and Taylor Salazar each had two off their serves.
The MMS seventh-grade “B” team upped its record to 3-3 for the year and remained undefeated in district at 3-0 with a two-game sweep of the Lady Bucs. The scores were 25-22 and 25-16.
Alyssa Bates hit for eight in a row in the win and Manda Gonzales topped that with 14 points consecutively to help the Lady Trojans capture the victory.
“The girls worked hard this week. We still have lots of work to do in the future, but they did a good job on Monday,” said coach Amber Thompson.
The Moreno Middle School Lady Trojans will travel to Alice on Monday to take on the Lady Coyotes. First serves will cross the nets at 5 p.m.
