PORT ARANSAS – The visiting Eagle varsity baseball team played right with the Marlins on Thursday night, all except for the first inning. The home team scored three runs in the bottom of the first to hold off the Eagles 4-1.

The Eagles got their lone run of the contest in the third as Anthony Mendoza doubled down the right field line. Two outs later, Mendoza was still at second. Lane Kruger was hit by a pitch to put runners at second and first with Coby Gonzales stepping to the plate.

Gonzales rapped a single to score Mendoza all the way from second, but the third out of the inning was made before the Eagles could do any more damage.

The Marlins picked up an insurance run off Eagle hurler Coby Gonzales in the home half of the fifth to complete the scoring. The Eagles failed to produce a run in the sixth or seventh innings against the Port Aransas pitchers.

Mendoza was 1-3 on the night with a run scored. Taylor Yeoman was 1-4, and Ryan Beck went 1-2 in the loss. Kruger was 1-2, and Coby Gonzales had one hit in three trips to the plate. Clay Brown finished the night with one hit in three plate appearances as did Matt Gonzales.

The loss dropped the Eagles’ record to 2-6 in district and 6-11 overall.
