As a resident of Three Rivers, I thank the extraordinary effort of the people involved in planning and executing the centennial events surrounding our town’s founding. The insert included in The Progress was a nice addition to the paper’s regular stories, and we hope it prompts more interest in the celebratory events planned.
However, as a genealogy buff and amateur historian, I found one critical item missing from the insert last week. Words that seemed appropriate come to mind: “photo courtesy of ---“ or “from the collection of ---.”
It is important that appropriate photo credit is given to the individuals or families who own these historical photos. If these people had not preserved our town’s founding, in these invaluable images all these years, we would have nothing to publish in our books, brochures, inserts, papers or elsewhere. History can be changed in the omission of a few words. We certainly don’t want that to happen in Three Rivers or elsewhere in the county.
