BEEVILLE — Police Chief Joe Treviño offered some tips for ensuring a safe Halloween this year, including keeping children under the age of 18 out of the bed of a moving pickup truck.

The chief said it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to ride in the bed of a pickup or in a trailer and that state law is in effect for a reason.

“We actually had a young girl fall out of a pickup bed last Halloween,” Treviño said.

Violating the law is a Class C misdemeanor, Treviño stressed. Anyone ticketed for ignoring the law could be fined up to $200.

Also, anyone driving in the northeast corner of the city, in the neighborhoods east of North Archer Street, need to be especially careful on Halloween night.

That part of town is always the most congested on Halloween night as trick or treaters converge on the neighborhoods.

Motorists need to watch for children who might dart out into the street between parked cars or cross unexpectedly at intersections.

The chief said it is important for parents to accompany younger children if they are walking in those neighborhoods.

The chief offered other tips for parents and children to follow for a safer Halloween experience. Those include:

• Participate in a Halloween carnival. Those events are often held at churches or other safe locations, and they are supervised by adults.

• Make sure the eye holes in the masks are large enough that they do not obstruct the wearer’s vision.

• Stay on sidewalks. Do not run across streets or run between parked vehicles.

• Make sure everyone or at least one or two persons in a group carries a flashlight after dark. And keep the light on while walking.

• Obey all laws and ordinances.

• Avoid tripping and falling. Do not wear long or loose costumes.

• Wear reflective costumes that will show up in street lights and headlights.

• Always trick or treat with an adult family member or trusted friend.

• Inspect all candy and throw away anything that has been opened or shows signs of tampering.
