The blaze erupted in the kitchen area but the exact cause is still under investigation.
The double-wide mobile home is just outside the city limits where State Highways 202 and 183 converge.
Marshall watched from nearby as his home was consumed by the fire.
Refugio Fire Chief Don Pullin said the blaze took a while to get under control so he called in firefighters from Woodsboro and Bayside.
“At first I couldn’t figure out why the fire wasn’t going out,” Pullin said. “We were getting a lot of water on the building.”
Marshall told him the metal roof was installed over wooden shingles, Pullin said.
“That explained why weren’t getting to the fire,” Pullin said.
The intense heat trapped between the metal room and the interior of the home kept firefighters at bay, he surmised.
“The roof was too hot and it was too dangerous for the firefighters to try to get through the metal roof,” Pullin said.
The fire was under control before 9 a.m.
