Living a few miles north of Beeville, we usually take Highway 181 North when going to San Antonio. Not anymore.
Driving north of Kenedy in the inside lane, it was wall-to-wall trucks, rigs, bulldozers, cranes, houses, tanks and who knows what. Suddenly, there was something red, larger than a couple of bricks, in my lane. I tried unsuccessfully to veer a little to my right without being crushed between trucks. Fortunately, I was able to make it onto the median despite a hole bigger than my thumb in the side of my highly-rated Michelin right front tire. It was really interesting feeling those giant trucks rumble by, shaking the car in their wakes. I knew that if the jack was placed behind the wheel and I was standing over the handle, my butt would be right on that solid yellow line.
Looking behind and ahead of me, observing the parade whiz by, I noticed that these large vehicles had difficulty with the yellow lines and the white stripes. I called AAA, and in 30 minutes or so, a nice young man put his butt on the line for my wife and me.
We will be taking the scenic, relaxing route to San Antonio from now on: U.S. 59 to IH 37, then north. I really appreciate that Rainy Day Fund up in Austin earning .5 percent interest, but I think it is raining trucks down here, and we need some road upgrades now.
