S-T JH cross country runners Tovar, Martinez capture gold

SKIDMORE – The Skidmore-Tynan Junior High cross country runners fared well at last week’s district cross country meet. Two young Lady Cats captured first place gold medals in the classes to highlight the meet for the S-T ’Cats.

In the seventh-grade girls competition, Lady Cat Samantha Tovar ran away from her competition to post a quick time of 15:56 over the two-mile course. Her time was 36 seconds better than her nearest competitor. Brandi Deleon from Mathis was second, in 16:32.

Skidmore’s Megan Haggard ran well and placed fourth overall with a time of 16:50. Anevay Rodriguez also finished in the top 10 with a sixth place finish in 19:27. Mathis won the team title in the seventh-grade girls division.

The seventh-grade boys event was dominated by the Mathis runners with the top three finishers all young Pirates. S-T’s Sampson Tovar placed fourth with a time of 15:02.

In the eighth-grade girls competition, Kaylynn Martinez from S-T was the quickest with a time of 15:02. In a close race, Martinez crossed the finish line just in front of Odem’s Abby Aguirre, who was timed in 15:03. Odem posted the best combined score to capture the team title with five of the top 11 finishers.

The eighth-grade boys event was won by JT Bryce from George West with a time of 12:27. S-T’s Kalvin Martin placed 11th overall with a time of 15:06. Mathis won the team championship with five runners placing in the top seven runners.
