The Lady Trojan JV played an early noon game, for their lone game over spring break. The Lady Trojans controlled the first 20 minutes of the game, keeping possession of the ball in the attacking third of the field the entire time.
Despite pressuring the Cardinal defense, the Lady Trojans were just not able to finish with a goal, but saw really good shots on goal from Amber Garcia, Maddie Zambrano and Christina Perez.
With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Cardinals got a sudden burst of energy and found themselves breaking into their attacking third and putting the Lady Trojan defense in danger. Their second run into the attacking third resulted in a bending shot on goal that scored.
This gave the Cardinals the momentum they needed to carry them through the rest of the game, leading to another goal. The Lady Trojans never found the rhythm they had in the first half, and ended the game down 2-0.
The Lady Trojan varsity players were ready to avenge their earlier 2-1 home loss to the Cardinals in the next game. The Lady Trojans quickly tested the Cardinal defense and tried to put together some runs in to the attacking third that were quickly shut down with an extremely physical defense.
The Lady Trojans stepped up and played more physically also but then found themselves being called for fouls. Towards the end of the first half, the Cardinals were making a run into the Lady Trojans’ attacking third when the Lady Trojans’ physical play caused a foul to happen inside the penalty box, resulting in penalty kick.
As the shot was taken, Mowdy Sanchez tried to dive in the direction of the ball, just missing. After the goal was scored, the Lady Trojans were determined to get the goal back and really pushed the attack. Keely Taylor combined with Brianna Cooley on the left side, seeing Cooley make a couple of deep runs into the attacking third. One of the runs saw Cooley playing to Taylor and Taylor crossing from left to right, just missing a scoring combination with Mackenzie Harvey and Kennedy Trevino.
In the second half, the Lady Trojans continued to push the attack, with Harvey and Joie Wilson finding some good combinations. After one pass from Wilson, Harvey was able to dribble past several Cardinal defenders and take a shot on goal that just went wide.
“We were definitely pushing more in the second half. We knew we needed to keep pressure on the Cardinal defense and that if we kept the pressure on, we would get some more shots on goal,” said head coach Scott Taylor.
As the game continued, the Lady Trojan defense found themselves being tested by that physical Cardinal attack. Late in the game, the Cardinals won another corner kick. The Lady Trojan defense defended the corner kick but then found themselves clearing right out to three Cardinal attackers, who were able to fire the ball back into the goal for another score.
The Lady Trojans were never able to recover and fell to the Cardinals 2-0.
“We have really worked hard in practice to continue to work on the skills we need to be successful. I was hoping for a different outcome but proud of the girls for never giving up,” Taylor said.
“We had some great individual effort, and we are making strides for some great team performances. I continue to look forward to the future of our program.”
The final game of the season will be in San Antonio on Tuesday against Harlandale.
