MATHIS – The district baseball season is fast approaching, and the Trojan baseball boys are still searching for some cohesion, a set starting lineup and rotation on the mound.

Last weekend’s Pirate tournament provided head coach Tom Carrera a few answers as the Trojans captured two wins out of the four games played.

On Thursday, the Beeville nine faced off against the Taft Greyhounds. The ’Hounds pitching and defense was plenty stout, and the Greyhounds captured a 9-0 win.

The Taft bats powered two home runs to go along with nine other hits against Trojan starter Clay Blackwell. The Greyhounds were up 1-0 after the first, and it stayed there until the bottom of the third. Taft scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead and then plated an additional five runs in the fourth to put the game away for the 9-0 win.

The Trojans banged out seven hits in the contest. Daniel Amador and Jonathan Huser had two hits apiece. Cameron Kremers, John Garza and Anthony Ruiz also hit safely in the game. Blackwell took the loss on the mound.

Friday’s first game had the Trojans in against a tough Refugio Bobcat squad. The Bobcats used a huge 10-run fourth to put the game out of reach and capture a 14-2 win.

It was close through the first three innings as the Beeville boys trailed just 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The ’Cats exploded in the final frame (time limit) with the 10 runs to secure the victory.

The Bobcats had 17 hits in the contest while the Trojans struggled offensively with just five base knocks. Joe Rey Garza had two hits in three trips to the plate while Marcus Gomez, Blackwell and Huser contributed hits. Gomez took the loss on the mound.

Things improved in Friday’s late game. The Trojans blanked the George West Longhorns 2-0 behind the shutout pitching of big left-hander Kremers. Kremers limited the GW bats to just one hit over his five innings of work on the mound while striking out 14 Longhorns.

Garza was 3-3 in the game to spark the Trojan offense from his leadoff spot. Blackwell and Amador each contributed two hits apiece. Blackwell had one RBI while Amador knocked in two runs for the Beeville boys. Kremers had one hit and scored once to help his own cause. Brandon Nelson also picked up a hit in the victory.

The tournament finale on Saturday morning had the Trojans against the West Oso Bears.

The Trojans struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Bears answered with a couple of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning off Beeville starter Garza.

It was still 2-1 through three innings. The Trojans added two runs in the fourth to gain the lead, and the pitching held up the rest of the way to claim the 3-2 win.

After Garza went one inning, the Trojans had Blackwell and Gomez on the mound facing the Bears. Kremers came in for one inning and put an end to the West Oso hopes by retiring the final couple batters to save the 3-2 victory.

Garza continued to hit well for Beeville with another two-hit game. Blackwell, Amador Gomez and Anthony Ruiz also produced hits.

The Beeville nine opened District 30-4A play on Tuesday night when the Wildcats from Gregory-Portland paid a visit to Beeville. The Trojans will compete this weekend in the Goliad tournament.
