Several Trojans and Lady Trojans captured medals at the event. Lady Trojan Elizabeth Segovia led the way by earning a gold medal in the SHW (super heavyweight) class with a three-lift total of 895 pounds.
In powerlifting, the athletes compete in three different lifts and their accumulated totals of their best lifts in the bench press, squat and dead-lift are combined for the “total” lift in pounds.
Amanda Alvarez captured fourth place in the 97-pound division with a combined total of 440 pounds. Samantha Sublet finished eighth overall in the 181-pound class with a 370-pound total.
Danyell Villareal competed at 148 pounds and finished with a total of 510 pounds. Amanda Puga competed in the same weight class and lifted for a 475-pound total.
The Trojans got a second place finish from SHW Adam Aleman with a lift total of 1,325 pounds. Josh Munoz placed sixth in the 148-pound class with a three-lift total of 900 pounds. Michael Rosas also competed at 148 pounds and came in with an 805-pound total for his three lifts. Jacob Flores competed at 165 pounds and finished with a 750-pound total while Walter Altamirano finished with a total of 805 pounds in the 220-pound class.
“We are a young team that is getting better on a daily basis. I saw a lot of potential; time will get these athletes stronger,” said powerlifting coach Alan Burkett.
The teams will be in George West today (Saturday) to compete at the Longhorns’ meet.
