The community of Tuleta again stepped up and pulled together for a great Tuleta Day this year, almost doubling the profit from last year at $3,090.

On May 15, the Tuleta Community Improvement Program held its annual Tuleta Day, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing to 4 p.m. Barbecue plates were served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The morning started with some strong thunderstorms, which had all the volunteers worried about the turnout. Friday evening, 40 briskets began cooking, pinto beans were put in the pots and tarps were put up over the eating and entertainment areas. The tarps didn’t hold up under the heavy winds and rain, so Saturday morning saw the redoing of Friday’s efforts. Because of the inclement weather, some vendors canceled, although several stayed to open.

The raffle was held at 3 p.m., with 18 winners of prizes from gift certificates to a 26-inch TV. Entertainment included Richie Albright, Lloyd Morris and Gabriella Chapa (the reigning queen of 2010 Little Miss Diez y Seis). The Cinnamon Clown delighted the children throughout the day with face painting and animal balloon figures.

This year marks the 17th annual celebration of Tuleta Day in the community.
