REFUGIO – A Rockport woman was taken to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi after her car was hit by a southbound Kansas City Southern train at 3:05 a.m. Sunday, March 24.

Monica Mae Johnson, 20, had made a wide left turn from Pametto Street to Santiago Street across the railroad tracks.

But she did not go far enough and turned onto the railroad tracks, ending up on the east part of the tracks. Her vehicle then became stuck in the tracks.

The train hit her from behind and pushed her vehicle two blocks south.

Refugio Police Chief Andy Lopez Jr. said he wasn’t sure what the extent of Johnson’s injuries were, but he thought that she would be OK.

“There is a pending investigation going on pertaining to the circumstances surrounding the accident,” he said.

The accident scene was cleared by 7 a.m.
