After days of ridicule for launching a conspiracy theory-fueled investigation into Barack Obama’s birth certificate, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett on Tuesday backed off his threat to keep the president off the ballot in November and apologized to his state.

“If I embarrassed the state, I apologize, but that certainly wasn’t my intent,” Bennett said in an interview with Phoenix radio station KTAR. “He’ll be on the ballot as long as he fills out the same paperwork and does the same things that everybody else has.”

Bennett said he still intends to keep asking Hawaii for verification that Obama’s birth certificate is authentic. But he said he only plans to use Hawaii’s answer as a way to satisfy demands from constituents who remain unconvinced Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States and so therefore eligible to be president.

He also said he talked to Hawaii’s attorney general on Monday night and clarified what he is looking to have verified. He said he “reworded” his request and expects to receive a response from Hawaii officials “in the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Last week, Bennett told a different Phoenix radio station it was “possible” he would keep Obama off the state’s ballot in November if Hawaii did not provide him with a satisfactory answers to his investigation.

On Tuesday, Bennett told talk show hosts Mac Watson and Larry Gaydos he had no idea about the wave of criticism he endure get after launching his investigation into the president’s birth certificate. He said again that he doesn’t consider himself a birther and he believes the president was born in Hawaii but he did this to satisfy a small number of vocal people who kept sending him angry emails about it.

“I feel like I was just trying to glue the far little corner of the carpet down,” Bennett said. “And as soon as you just touch the carpet, the whole floor buckles.”

Well Laselva all I can say to that rant is congratulations. At least you married a woman.

You and I may well have passed each other on the pier. You passing to the left and me passing to the right.

During my time in the service I don't remember meeting any card carrying left wing liberals who thought the action in Vietnam was justified. I did meet many who served there along with many South Vietamese who understood why we were there.

I can only assume that as a PH you didn't get out much? Maybe spent too much time in a dark room?

Seeing the world through the distortion of a camera lense.

I seem to remember you are in California. Good place for you.

LW-

As a card-carrying lefty, liberal, native born, well educated and well respected in my profession, and a veteran, who honorably served his country (The United States) when called, raised his children to be good Americans (and Lefties also), stayed faithfully married to the same woman for 43 years and still consider her my best friend (unlike the Red state, right-wing Repubs who have the highest divorce rate in the country) - although God bless Mitt for his lengthy marriage as with Obama - good folks whose children love them (Who cares about some basket case calling everyone a traitor, which should be a federal offense as those are serious words to be calling anyone, especially a sitting president). Anyway, I got carried away. I salute you and your efforts to bring light to the dark folds of S.E. Texas. Some might consider this a waste of your precious time on this earth, but to me that only makes you a bigger hero. I salute you. And, oh, I am awaiting for responses on this one. Especially the "quacking."

HellF- You failed that response also. Your comment shows you to be without rhythm and probably unable to lead properly, an ability women appreciate almost as much as honesty in a man. Here's a hint: left foot first, hand at the small of the back and a good deodorant.

HF- It was a test and you failed...or at least got a D. The test describes everyone. One should be able to recognize at least one bigoted trait in yourself. I see a little of 6 in myself and am working on cooling it when possible.

I'm just thrilled Dancing with the Stars is finally over and I get my wife back (Should have never taken those Latin dance lessons).

Other Half-

The following is a little test might help to weed out just who is a bigot and who isn't.

The Bigot.

Being a bigot and displaying total ignorance of the world and everyone else in it is not really a great attribute. Bigots cannot normally identify their own narrow mindedness because they are so self absorbed and never willing to listen to others. But, if you are one of those not yet fully blinkered then there is some hope of recovery.

Do any of the following sound like you?

1. You have no doubt in your mind that what you believe is the truth... and those that are opposed are just too dumb to see it.

2. No one can ever beat you in an argument... and they shouldn’t even try.

3. You feel that you’re just trying to educate people, and they should listen to you.

4. You feel that traveling is only for people that come from other countries, after all, your country and way of life is ideal and all others should take note.

5. You never hide your personal views when in the company of others even when you know you shouldn’t talk religion or politics. You don’t see the point in holding back valuable knowledge, even if it does spoil the evening.

6.You like to ask loaded questions in the hope that people in need of educating will try and dispute with you but of course (referring back to point 2) no one can ever beat you in an argument and they shouldn’t even try.

7. All of your good friends agree with you all of the time.

8. You feel that people visiting your country should learn to speak fluently or not bother visiting at all.

So, why should we care what the bigots think? They actually have a right to be bigots. They have a right to hate — to a point, as long as they don’t cross the line and commit a crime.

We should probably feel sorry for them, because it can’t be pleasant for them to harbor such despicable feelings and thoughts.

I know you argue with the opposition because some enlightenment may get through to them once ever 100 posts. So, yes, feel some compassion for them, but don’t let their ignorant, hateful remarks get you down, because they only make themselves look bad when they utter their scummy thoughts, anonymously, on this and other websites. Feel compassion for them because they have the worst sickness of all.
