The airpark, originally built by the Navy in the 1970s and known as the Chase Naval Air Station Auxiliary Landing Field Berclair, was purchased by Goliad County in 1999 for $1.
During the summer of 2011, the Navy repurchased the airpark from the county, offering $2.36 million.
The county contends another appraisal company valued the airpark at $9 million and the county is seeking to have the property’s value raised.
“Hopefully, we can mediate a settlement prior to going to court,” Bowman said.
“When both parties go in there, they have to agree to a settlement amount. If we can come to an agreement on an amount, then both sides will sign off on it and we’ll be done with it.”
Bowman said July 9 is the target date for the mediation, which will take place in Houston. An original court date of July 8 had been scheduled for both sides to meet in federal court.
The commissioners met with county attorneys Friday in closed session. Precinct 3 Commissioner Ronald Bailey made the motion to authorize Bowman and Precinct 1 Commissioner Julian Flores seconded the motion.
