The Karnes County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Conservation Essay and Poster Contest. Two-hundred fourteen elementary students (1st-5th grades) from all four schools districts in Karnes County participated in this year’s poster contest. Students were asked to create a poster with this year’s theme “Soil to Spoon” that relates to their role in any phase of resource conservation. Entries were judged by the Karnes County SWCD Directors and ribbons presented to each teacher’s room for places 1st through 4th. In addition, overall district winners were selected for each grade and presented with a $25 cash prize. Three overall district poster winners were selected to compete in the regional contest.
In the essay contest, eighty-three junior high students (6th- 8th grades) and twenty-three high school students (9th-12th grades) participated in this year’s contest theme, “Why Soil and Water Conservation Is Important to My Future”. Cash prizes and ribbons were awarded to 1st and 2nd places of each grade in the District for junior high, and 1st and 2nd place in the District for all high school grade levels combined. Two district essay winners were selected to compete in the regional contest.
The Karnes County SWCD would like to give a special thank-you to all of the students, parents, teachers, and school staff and administration for participating in this year’s contest and making it a fun and interactive learning experience for our communities’ youth.
