KARNES COUNTY – A group of nine local candidates running for three county offices participated in a local political debate Feb. 19 that was attended by an audience of more than 200 people.
The Karnes Countywide partnered with Radio KAML 990 AM and KTNR 92.1 FM to bring a Candidates Forum and Debate to the Karnes City High School Auditorium.
Candidates for the offices of county judge, county commissioner and county clerk were invited to share the stage with moderator Cletus Bianchi and responded to questions submitted by local media and the general public.
Candidates for county judge, Democrat incumbent Barbara Najvar Shaw, Democrat challenger Walter R. Long and Republican candidate Maurice A. Yarter all participated.
Precinct 2 County Commissioner Democrat incumbent A. T. Pete Jauer was invited to participate but did not attend due to a previous commitment. Jauer is running unopposed for re-election.
Precinct 4 County Commissioner Democrat Candidates Adrian Yanta, David Reynolds, Sharon Chesser and Republican Candidate Brenda Hansler all participated in the event.
Incumbent Democrat County Clerk Carol Swize and Democrat challenger for the position of county clerk Maggie Gonzales both participated.
The group of candidates were welcomed by Bianchi and then made opening statements. They then responded to questions. The candidates then made closing statements at the conclusion of the event.
