Felipa Lara Candelaria, 83, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, in Brownsville.

Mrs. Candelaria was born near Karnes City and lived there until 1947 when she married Juan Lara. They moved to Pawnee and operated Lara’s Grocery Store. After Juan’s passing, she operated the store by herself for a total of 40 years. In 2010, she moved to Brownsville to live with her daughter. She was a devout Catholic, a great cook and a talented seamstress.

Survivors include her daughter, Eva Alejandro; son, Juan (Lydia) Lara Jr.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Lupe Lara and Gertrude Lerma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Juan Lara Sr. and Selestino Candelaria; parents, Timoteo and Gregoria Villafranca; brothers, Francisco, Cristobal, Antonio, Santiago and Baltazar; and sister, Martina Lopez.

Visitation was held Monday, March 10, in the Eckols Funeral Home Chapel in Kenedy. A rosary was recited there at 7 o’clock that evening.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, March 11, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Pawnee.

Interment followed in the New Bremen Cemetery.
