What is meant when a sower goes out to sow in Jesus’ parable and in reality has different results as narrated in the homily presented by the Rev. Jeff Thompson, retired Lutheran minister from Nordheim, who filled in for the Rev. Wally Schievelbein, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran, on the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost.

In Jesus’ parable the sower spread seeds with different results: one, on a pathway from which birds ate them; two, on rocky ground where without soil they sprouted and then withered away; three, among thorns which choked them so there was not growth; and four, on good soil where they produced and brought forth grain.

Soil is meant the way in which people receive the word of God. There may be no religious understanding, particularly to those with hardened hearts. Some people might listen but do not want to participate. Some are too busy making a living to listen or be involved, meaning how little they really understand the word. Jesus does not give up on his disciples, telling them they are to continue his mission as they spread in different regions.

The main character, the sower, must operate carefully to be succesful. Careless or reckless scattering give no promise of growth. Depending on the soil, some seeds sprout, but not produce. The sower must hope that some will grow and produce abundantly.

Some congregations play it safe in spreading the word of God. Some individuals don’t want to waste time or energy. If mistakes are made, followers should try again. Some energy brings out new ideas that might work. Jesus through the parable tells that he will not give up on humans and will be with them till the end of the world.

Jesus is the sower of each. Some people will not receive his word. But some will take the message of the sower and spread it in the neighborhood. A sower tells others how God got them through a difficult time. A sower comforts someone who is grieving. A sower volunteers to help others with their difficulty. One sower will work along with other sowers. A sower should invite others to participate in sowing seed, which come through spreading God’s word in all areas of life. Jesus’ mission was to get everyone to take chances with the end result hopefully being successful.

Sow the seed of God’s word to others and invite them to join the congregation at Good Shepherd Lutheran on July 20 for the worship service at 9:30 a.m. and the Adult Sunday School at 10:45 a.m.
