The $643,627 project installed a new traffic signal to allow traffic from SH 123 and SH 80 to turn left on to southbound US 181. The plan also includes re-striping southbound US 181 to create one lane for through traffic on US 181 and a merge lane for SH 123/SH 80 traffic to safely enter US 181. TxDOT also installed “Signal Ahead” warning signs with a flashing yellow beacon in both directions of US 181 and placed rumble strips on the US 181 road surface to remind drivers of the upcoming traffic signal.
“With the increased traffic in the county in the last few years, TxDOT was eager to work with officials in Karnes County, Kenedy, and Karnes City to improve safety and reduce crashes at that intersection,” said Lonnie Gregorcyk, P.E., Interim District Engineer for the TxDOT Corpus Christi District, which includes Karnes County. “We appreciate the cooperative working relationship with local officials and the shared commitment to improving safety in this fast-growing region.”
TxDOT will monitor and adjust the signal timing over the next several weeks to accommodate traffic conditions.
