GOLIAD – The smiles on the children’s faces almost outnumbered the bags of gifts Saturday at the Julie Wimberly Building.

The Goliad County Sheriff’s Office held its annual “Silver Santa” gift giveaway and handed out over 80 bags of toys and children’s clothes to families throughout the county.

Parents of Goliad ISD children were able to sign up their children for the program. Organizer Debby Brumby said the number of families taking advantage of the program this year was down from 2012.

“I called one family who were on the list last year and they told me their husband got a job in the oilfield,” Brumby said.

Volunteers were at the Julie Wimberly Building much of last week receiving toys and clothing and coordinating them with each family’s wish list.

“We probably wrapped 800 gifts between 9 in the morning and 1:30 in the afternoon Thursday,” Brumby said. “We had some more people come in Thursday night to wrap for us and we wrapped a little bit more on Friday.”

The program also accepted donations of gently used items for a giveaway Saturday morning.
