Fourteen runners will travel to the Regional Cross Country Meet this weekend, but what makes Coach Jennifer Card even prouder is all but one are underclassmen and will return for future seasons -- and for what she hopes are future successes.

“I made it to regionals by running hard every day,” freshman Tomas Perales said.

Perales won 9th at the District Meet last week, Oct. 23, to help the varsity boys finish as district runners-up and qualify for regional. Junior Chris Tobar placed 11th, sophomore Robert Morin 16th, junior Jeremy Coronado 19th, junior Ari Lopez 20th and sophomore Brandon Harrin 21st.

The varsity girls also were district runners-up and qualified for regional, paced by sophomore Kristina Sauceda’s 3rd place finish, followed by freshman Jordan Garcez’s 4th, sophomore Clara Gotthardt’s 6th, senior Courtney Garcez’s 9th, sophomore Madie Walter’s 16th and sophomore Seande Goodhue’s 20th.

“I would practice hard every day and dedicated myself to cross country,” Jordan Garcez said. ” I am very happy and really excited to see how well my next meet is.”

Regional will be this Saturday, Nov. 3, at the UTSA Shooting Complex. Two JV runners, sophomore Randy Flores and freshman Emily Valdez, will join varsity.

JV boys and girls and junior high boys and girls won their district championships.

Junior Katy Gotthardt was district champion, Emily Valdez won 3rd, sophomore Savanah Segura followed at 4th, senior Hailey Johnson placed 6th and freshman Elena Valdez came in 7th.

For the JV boys, freshman Rhett Kelley won 3rd, Flores placed 5th, sophomore Harley Garcia won 6th, senior Rodney Foreman was 9th and freshman Edmond Valdez finished 12th.

Coach Card has some junior high runners who have had successful seasons too. The junior high girls, all seventh-graders, won the district championship with Kendall Kelley charging the way with a 2nd, followed by Katia Cavazos with 3rd, Larissa Valdez with 4th, Tara Coronado with 5th, Abigail Franke with 6th, Haleigh Kunschik with 7th and Jenny Stewart at 8th.

For the boys, seventh-grader Jacob Coffman was the district champ, winning gold. Eighth-grader Kyler Palmer finished 2nd, seventh-grader Brent Gisler came in 4th, and eighth-graders Jarren Jaramillo 7th and Matthew Vajdos 8th.
