CORPUS CHRISTI – The American Red Cross invites the community to attend a free New Volunteer Orientation and “Disaster Services: An Overview.”

General public interested in becoming a volunteer or anyone wanting to learn more about the American Red Cross from the counties served by the chapter (Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio and McMullen counties) is invited to attend the orientation on Monday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Red Cross Coastal Bend-Texas Chapter, 1721 S. Brownlee Blvd., in Corpus Christi.

Participants will learn about the history of the American Red Cross, vital services provided to the communities, the many volunteer opportunities available and a general overview of the Red Cross’ role during disasters.

The Red Cross works with new volunteers to find roles that best suit each person’s skills, interests and schedule. Some of the many opportunities available include: assisting victims of disaster; supporting local military members, their families and veterans; teaching lifesaving skills and disaster training courses; educating the community about disaster and emergency preparedness; clerical duties; communications; and assisting with special events and fundraisers.
