Mr. Cantu was born April 16, 1939. He served in the United States Armed Forces, retiring with honorable discharge in 1984. During his service in Vietnam, he was decorated with the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After his discharge, he worked as an administrator for the local VA clinic until retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rafael Cantu; two brothers, Adolfo Cantu and John Charles Cantu; and a sister, Ruth Thelma Perez.
Survivors include his wife, Maria G. Cantu of Laredo; children, Denise Cantu and Tania Cantu, both of Laredo, Tammy Rose Cantu, Marianne Cantu and Rafael Cantu, all of San Antonio; grandchildren Aime and Markus Benavides, Nicholas, David, Angela Cantu, Mateo and Carlos Alvarado, and Christopher Cantu; his mother, Adela (Perez) Cantu of Beeville; siblings, Nancy (Sid) Garcia of Beeville, Martha (Bland) Chamberlain of Corpus Christi, Hazel (George) Bernard of Beeville, Elsie Boren of Portland, Fred Cantu of San Antonio, Jesse Cantu and Joe (Adela) Cantu, both of Beeville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels in Laredo from 5 to 8 p.m. A rosary was recited there at 6:30 with Msgr. James Harris officiating.
The funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Interment followed at Laredo City Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Joe Jackson Funeral Chapels in Laredo.
